Many years ago, Birches founder Jim Curto, a native of nearby La Grange and a veteran of hospital and nursing home administration, heard about a then-new idea: assisted living.
Assisted living was progressive. It offered nicer private living spaces in a common home and was flexible to offer individualized support.
After studying assisted living communities around the country, Curto collected the best ideas for The Birches. His plan was to offer a physical setting and an opportunity for older adults to pursue a fulfilling lifestyle (something he now calls a Successful Aging lifestyle) that people couldn’t get elsewhere.
In 1999, he opened The Birches. A stand alone, owner-operated assisted living and memory care community in Clarendon Hills. He, members of his family, and Jackie Sander, the executive director, comprise the ownership group.
Curto said he’s reached his goal. “We have a community of elders in rental apartment homes living in a rich network of personalized support, and a loyal, passionate team that provides a culture of growth and opportunity. We couldn’t be happier about how everything has worked out and we look forward to what will come next."
