Dr. Nazimuddin, from Midwest Geriatrics Specialists and visiting physician at The Birches, and Rachael Telleen, a member of the POLST Executive Team, will discuss advanced directives in depth.  They will detail the POLST (Practitioner’s Orders for Life Sustaining Treatment) which replaced the DNR (Do Not Resuscitate) a few years ago.  They will also discuss the powers and limits of the Power of Attorney (POA) documents.

    2. Through the concepts used on the Second City Stage participants will learn how they can lean on the rules of IMPROV to improve their communication with people with dementia. This interactive and fun presentation will help participants to develop validation skills & active listening skills that will work with all types of dementia. Tami and Catherine are the Co-Founders of Silver Dawn Senior Friendly Cities.

November 09: Managing Your Caregiver Stress

    1. Description:
    2. Katie Schaff Fagan, LCSW, CDP a social worker and the Director of Encore and Dementia Care Services, will discuss some of the hardships of taking care of someone with impaired cognition.  She will also talk about the necessity of taking care of oneself and how that makes us all better caregivers. The talk will include simple tactics for everyday relaxation.
