November 7: LGBTQ+ Aging: Addressing Health Care Needs

Start: November 7th 2019 at 7:30am
End: November 7th 2019 at 9:00am

Please join us for breakfast and an educational presentation for Heathcare Professionals presented by Nancy Flowers, MSW, LCSW, with AMITA Health.

A 2014 survey by SAGE, an advocacy organization for older LGBTQ+ people, found that fear of discrimination can result in avoidance of health care and reluctance to share information about their sexual orientation with primary health care providers. LGBTQ+ older adults are often less likely to reach out to providers, senior centers, meal programs and other services for which they might be eligible out of fear of harassment or discrimination. This presentation will focus on ways that health care providers can be more aware of the challenges LGBTQ+ older adults experience accessing culturally competent care and ways to make programs more welcoming to LGBTQ+ older adults and their care partners.
