Considering assisted living for yourself or a loved one can bring up a lot of questions—and that’s completely normal. This page is designed to give you honest, straightforward answers about life at The Birches.

Whether you're just starting your search or already weighing your options, you'll find helpful insights about our approach to care, community life, and what makes us different. Let’s make your journey to finding the right support a little easier.

What is assisted living?

Assisted living at The Birches offers personalized support for older adults who want to maintain independence while receiving help with daily activities like bathing, dressing, medication reminders, and more. It’s a great option for those who don’t require skilled nursing care but appreciate having a bit of extra support in a warm, home-like setting.

Where is The Birches Assisted Living located?

We’re located at:

 215 55th Street, Clarendon Hills, IL 60514

Just a short drive from Downers Grove, Hinsdale, Burr Ridge, Western Springs and other Chicago suburbs. We are conveniently located near Route 83. Our community is tucked away on two acres of peaceful, nature-filled land.

What makes Assisted Living at The Birches different?

For starters, The Birches is the only locally owned and operated Senior Living community in DuPage County. We are also the only Gold Certified Montessori Inspired Lifestyle senior living community in Illinois, offering a truly unique environment of choice, dignity, and flexibility. Our community feels like home—not a hotel or facility—and is led by long-tenured team members who care deeply about every individual who lives here.

We focus on Successful Aging, promoting growth at every age, with plenty of fresh air, natural surroundings, and meaningful community connections.

What does "Montessori Inspired Lifestyle" mean?

Our Montessori approach supports individuality, independence, and purpose, even for those living with memory loss. We empower our Members to engage in everyday life with joy, meaning, and choice—encouraging success, not perfection, in a failure-free environment.

What are our assisted living apartments like?

Our apartments are spacious, and we offer a variety of floor plans designed to feel open, calming, and comfortable. Our assisted living apartments include a number of safety features, including:

  • ADA compliant toilets
  • Easy low entry shower with soft flexible curb
  • Complimentary emergency pendants as well as a call button in the bathroom
  • Low pile wall to wall carpet for ease of walking and maneuvering

What kinds of activities are offered?

Our Life Enrichment program offers a full calendar of activities rooted in resident interests—from fitness classes and creative arts to music therapy and nature-inspired programs. Every activity is designed to promote engagement, connection, and joy.

Are food services included?

Absolutely. Our dining room serves chef-prepared meals that cater to various dietary needs. Member-led committees meet with our Culinary Services Director monthly to gather feedback and discuss future menus. Members are given multiple menu choices at each meal, and every choice is prepared with fresh, nutritious ingredients. Mealtime is a community gathering experience, and support is available for anyone who needs it.

What is the cost of assisted living?

At The Birches, we believe pricing should be simple, clear, and transparent. Unlike many communities, we do not charge a community fee, and we offer a flexible, à la carte pricing model. That means you only pay for the care and services you actually need—when you need them. Your monthly rent and overall cost at The Birches will depend on:

  • The apartment home you choose (studio, one-bedroom, or two-bedroom)
  • Medication Management
  • Nursing Support
  • Daily Living Assistance (dressing, grooming, etc.)
  • Laundry & Mobility Escort Services

Each of these services can be added—or removed—based on your needs each month.

What's included in The Birches’ monthly residency fee?

Your monthly residency fee includes far more than just an apartment. Here’s what’s included as part of your everyday living experience at The Birches:

  • A private apartment with kitchenette and private bathroom
  • Three chef-prepared meals daily, with modified diets available
  • Life Enrichment programs, clubs, and outings
  • Housekeeping and maintenance
  • Community-wide Wi-Fi and satellite TV
  • Complimentary emergency call pendants
  • Utilities, including a landline phone and climate control
  • Access to secured gardens, patios, and nature spaces
  • Pet-friendly accommodations (with a refundable pet fee)
  • Icon® Family Engagement Platform for staying connected

Is The Birches a pet-friendly senior living community?

Absolutely—pets are welcome here at The Birches! As long as they can safely and comfortably live in our community, residents are encouraged to bring their furry companions along. We just ask that pet owners take responsibility for their pet’s care and cleanup.

To help maintain our apartment homes, we do require a signed pet agreement and a $500 deposit.

How do I know if assisted living is the right choice?

If daily tasks are starting to feel overwhelming—or if you or your loved one feels isolated—it might be time to explore assisted living. Residents in assisted living may have health conditions limiting their ability to live independently.

Our team can help determine what level of care is best for you or your loved one based on a clinical assessment done here at our community.
