A Purpose-Driven Way to Age Successfully
Montessori Meets Assisted Living: A Revolutionary Approach at The Birches
At The Birches in Clarendon Hills, aging isn't something that happens to you—it's something you actively shape. As the first Gold Certified Montessori Inspired Lifestyle senior living community in Illinois, we’ve embraced a revolutionary model that empowers older adults to live independently and continue to learn, grow and make new connections at their own pace, and perhaps most important – find purpose throughout their day.
Montessori isn’t just a teaching method—it’s a philosophy of living with purpose, dignity, and joy. And we’ve woven it into every part of daily life here, from how meals are planned to how Members start their mornings to ensure they are living the best life possible.
What is Montessori-Inspired Assisted Living?
Montessori-Inspired Assisted Living means Members have the freedom to shape their day their way. That might look like choosing a quiet morning on the porch, joining a club meeting, or helping plan next month’s events.
We’ve created a community where Members participate in life—not passively receive care. That means:
- Choosing life enrichment activities that spark their interests and connect with neighbors
- Contributing ideas that shape the community, design, and future growth
- Engaging in routines that reflect personal preferences and identity
By embracing these self-directed learning and self-motivated activity principles, The Birches’ Montessori Inspired Living promotes choice, dignity, and independence. We facilitate independence, ownership, and purpose by encouraging Members to embrace choice, freedom, and our support to live their day as independently as possible, the way they’d like, regardless of what is on the calendar. They help create their home, and their day with the right support from The Birches’ team.
At The Birches, we support our Members while they maintain meaningful roles within the community—it’s fulfilling and empowering. Taking an active role in community life such as joining a committee, starting a Club, volunteering within the neighborhood, etc., enhances social connection, and brings a genuine sense of purpose. It’s all part of our Montessori-Inspired approach, where the environment promotes curiosity, connection, and sparks joy.
Whether it’s enjoying the comforting sound of birds outside, the scent of herbs in our garden, Gourmet Club events, or the casual sounds of familiar music, our community is rich in sensory experiences. Here are a few ways Members can get involved:
Dining Committee
Help shape the culinary experience by offering input on menu selections and sharing feedback directly with our culinary team.
Calendar Planning Committee
Have a say with what we do and what we learn next! Collaborate with our team to select engaging social events and programs that reflect Member or cultural interests.
Gardening Club
Connect with nature, contribute to the beauty of our grounds, and enjoy the peaceful satisfaction that comes from connecting our hand-to-mind by helping things grow.
Volunteering
Giving back fulfills the soul! At The Birches, we make it easy to stay involved in ways that feel meaningful to Members. Whether that’s reading to kids, mentoring students, or helping with a local fundraiser, there’s no shortage of ways to make a difference.
Here, every role matters—because every person matters. And when each Member is supported in their own growth and expression, it truly feels like home.
Why Does Montessori Matter in Assisted Living?
Most assisted living communities typically utilize a traditional care model that offers living spaces in an apartment or a room with a shared common space. These traditional care models provide meals, assistance with personal care, housekeeping, and laundry services, as well as social or recreational activities in large and small group settings. While necessities are met, the conventional care model has limitations in personalizing spaces; and importantly, the principles of independence and self-directed lifestyles are not emphasized.
Our Montessori-inspired senior living offers the same structure of assisted living with dining, housekeeping, personal care assistance, and laundry services. Where The Birches differs is our emphasis on fostering community, independence, choice, and autonomy. At The Birches, we recognize the need to be flexible because each person brings a unique set of experiences, interests, growth, and contributions that can enhance one’s quality of life while creating the comforts of home.
Living in a Montessori-Inspired environment empowers Members to be independent by offering choices. We focus on person-centered senior care that allows for the freedom to choose the activities, meals, and daily structure each Member needs to have the lifestyle that they imagine.

The Benefits of Montessori Inspired Assisted Living
Social connection, encouraged mobility, and adaptive cognitive challenges are all supported by the Montessori approach. Our community creates an environment that reduces social isolation with a culture that encourages mobility. Our Montessori approach helps Members:
- Stay connected and independent
- Learn new things, no matter their age
- Feel valued through real contributions
- Grow in a space that feels like home
Traditional care models often focus on tasks and routines. At The Birches, we focus on people. We know through research that people, especially older adults, thrive when they are given opportunities to continue learning, growing, contributing, and connecting.

Purposeful Activities
At The Birches, every activity is more than just something to do—it’s an opportunity to feel capable, valued, challenged at times, and meaningfully engaged. That’s what makes it purposeful.
Our programming is intentionally designed to activate the mind, support physical ability, and create emotional connections. We offer a rich variety of experiences so every Member can find—or rediscover—what lights them up! Here are a few meaningful ways our Members engage every day:
Music & Memory Moments
Whether it’s singing along to a favorite song, playing an instrument, dance therapy, or simply tapping along to a rhythm, music awakens the soul. It triggers emotional memory, reduces stress, and often sparks recognition. Music connects people to their past, their feelings, and each other.
Flower Arranging & Nature-Based Crafts
With hands busy and senses engaged through Montessori methods; Members find peace and creative expression in arranging flowers for community enjoyment or enjoying the benefits of nature-based crafts. Incorporating nature to support fine motor skills offers a calming, meditative, experience to lower blood pressure, anxiety, depression. Plus, the joy of creating beauty to enjoy in their home.
Folding Laundry & Sorting Activities
Simple tasks like volunteering to fold towels with the culinary team, or sorting items by color or size for life enrichment activities may seem simple, but they carry powerful benefits! They reinforce coordination, promote routine, and give a sense of purpose and usefulness.
Game Clubs & Friendly Competitions
From weekly Rummikub to creating a Bridge Club, games encourage lighthearted fun while also supporting cognitive flexibility and social bonding. They’re a reminder that learning and laughter are ageless!
Chair Yoga, Tai Chi & Movement to Music
Gentle movement supports balance, strength, and mobility—all essential for staying independent. These classes are research-based and designed to be joyful and inclusive, connecting the mind to the spirit to reduce stress and increase agility. Using Montessori methods, we don’t need massive gym equipment in our home to age better together. Our mind, body, and spirit are all we need to challenge ourselves and grow.
Gardening Club
Members plan and care for plants, herbs, and seasonal flowers in our vibrant indoor and outdoor spaces. Digging in the dirt, watering seedlings, or harvesting herbs taps into deep sensory memory and provides a feeling of calm and connection to nature—alongside a sense of ownership and accomplishment.
Spiritual Support & Mindfulness
For those who wish to explore their inner life, we offer meditation and mindfulness opportunities, visits from local chaplains and spiritual groups, and time for reflection. These research-based practices create space for peace, gratitude, and emotional resilience.
Movie Nights, Discussion Groups & Clubs
Whether diving into a classic film or discussing a good book with your neighbors in our Book Club, these shared experiences foster belonging and stimulate thoughtful conversation. They remind each Member: your voice matters here.
At The Birches, as Dr. Maria Montessori described it best, “everything you do for me you take away from me.” Everything we do throughout our day is considered an activity through the Montessori-view. A purposeful activity to The Birches isn’t just a scheduled task on a community calendar—it’s a meaningful moment, chosen by the Member, as they choose to do it. From waking up and having breakfast, to calling and chatting with loved ones, to reading a book in your apartment or joining others at a program or on a planned outing - every activity, choice, and moment is an opportunity to age better! Because when people are engaged in ways that reflect who they are, with the right environment and support, they thrive.
